Plein Air Painting

Step into the open air and let nature become your muse. Enjoy a relaxing outdoor painting experience that deepens your connection to the landscape while helping you grow as an artist. For curious beginners or seasoned painters exploring a fresh approach.

Painting outdoors requires simplicity and portability. Please bring the following supplies so we can work comfortably outside.

Watercolor Paint Set(12-24 colors recommended) A travel watercolor set with built-in palette works best.

Brushes: Synthetic watercolor brushes are perfect for outdoor painting. Bring 3-4 brushes total

  • Round #10 or #12(main brush)
  • Round #6 or #8
  • Small Round #2 or #4 (details)
  • ½” flat or wash brush
  • Bamboo or cotton roll up brush organizer

Paper

  • Watercolor pad, 6x8” or larger
  • Lightweight drawing board or clipboard that sits comfortably in your lap

Drawing supplies

  • Pencil (HB or 2B)
  • Eraser
  • Waterproof pen(optional)

Water & painting supplies

  • Small water container(jar or collapsible cup)
  • Paper towels or small cloth

Outdoor setup

  • Backpack or art tote to carry supplies
  • Folding chair, stool, or Crazy Creek style camp chair(optional)
  • Hat and/or sun protection
  • Sweatshirt/long sleeve shirt(optional)
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray(optional)

Helpful Extras

  • Painter’s tape or masking tape
  • Bulldog clips or clothespins (for windy days)
  • Small trash bag
  • Viewfinder (optional)
  • Water for drinking

Heather Friedli is Saint Paul’s premiere contemporary impressionistic artist. Friedli’s work represents places she has explored in her yearly “Artventures'' in the woods, rivers and beyond. Her experiences in the landscape dictate brush strokes in these imaginative and brilliant paintings. Within these kinesthetic and contextual works, Friedli explores the spiritual world through the lens of culture and lived experience of place. Her work is creative, soulful, bold, and powerful.
