Immigrants & the Making of St. Paul's East Side Walking Tour
Examine the role of immigration in the making and remaking of St. Paul’s East Side. Visit Swede Hollow, one of the area’s earliest immigrant settlements, and Payne Avenue, a center of community life. Follow the stories of Swedish, Irish, German, and Italian immigrants before turning to the Hmong, Somali, Latino, and Karen communities that shape the East Side today. Approx. 1 mile walk.

Peter Rachleff taught American Labor, Immigration and African American History at Macalester College for over 30 years. He has retired from college instruction and is now leading a new project, the East Side Freedom Library, which is transforming the historic Carnegie library formerly know as Arlington Hills Library into a labor and immigration history center.
