St. Paul’s Little Mekong Cultural District invites participants into a vibrant Southeast Asian cultural corridor shaped by migration, resilience, and entrepreneurship along University Avenue. The experience begins at XIA Books & Cafe, where community leader Va-Megn Thoj welcomes participants and grounds the journey in the story of the Mekong River and its connection to identity, history, and place. From there, participants walk through a neighborhood alive with murals, shops, and community stories. Along the way, elders from Vietnamese Social Services share reflections of pride, gratitude, and courage, including stories from those who came to the United States as refugees of war. At the Hmong Cultural Center, participants deepen their understanding of the importance, and the difficulty, of preserving oral-based histories. The journey continues through local restaurants, where dishes such as somlaw kao kou, a savory Cambodian soup with green papaya, eggplant, and pumpkin, evoke memories of family, tradition, and foodways across generations and borders. Explore the rich history of St. Paul’s Rondo Neighborhood, once home to 85% of the city’s Black residents and a thriving hub of businesses, churches, and community life. Led by Marvin Anderson, the “Godfather of Rondo,” this tour highlights historic landmarks, the impact of I-94, and ongoing revitalization efforts. Participants also engage in a meaningful service project at Hallie Q. Examine the role of immigration in the making and remaking of St. Paul’s East Side. Visit Swede Hollow, one of the area’s earliest immigrant settlements, and Payne Avenue, a center of community life. Follow the stories of Swedish, Irish, German, and Italian immigrants before turning to the Hmong, Somali, Latino, and Karen communities that shape the East Side today. Explore the land and our native plant relatives from a Dakota perspective. This plant walk will be lead by Tanaǧidaŋ To Wiŋ. Together we will share, learn, and honor our sacred plant nation.
